History

Wake Internal Medicine Consultants, Inc. (WIMC) is a professional corporation that grew out of the Internal Medicine practice of Dr. Thomas Umphlet. Dr. Umphlet began his practice in 1938 at the Cameron Apartments building in Raleigh, North Carolina, with a medical office and onsite lab. This lab was the only approved serology lab in North Carolina that was not state owned. His office moved to 119 S. Boylan Avenue, Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1947 as partners were added.

The practice was incorporated in 1981 and was moved into the Rex Hospital medical office building at the then new Lake Boone Trail site. The physicians practiced at that location until 1985 when the practice moved into the new 3100 Blue Ridge Road building (our current location). After months of planning, the practice expanded to its new North Raleigh satellite location in March 2008. Conveniently located in the new Durant Medical Center, WIMC continues its focus on Internal Medicine with the addition of a Pediatrics program!

Currently, WIMC consists of 27 physicians and 3 physician assistants. WIMC offers general medical care to adults and children with subspecialty care in:
