Family medicine is a medical specialty that provides comprehensive care for people of all ages. The physician is usually labeled as a family physician or family doctor. Family medicine is under the umbrella of primary care. The goal of the specialty is to provide ongoing and complete healthcare to individuals and families, covering all ages, genders, body systems and medical conditions. As with any primary care specialty, family medicine provides the first point of contact for a patient dealing with health issues. The specialty also focuses on the day-in-day-out care and health education of a patient. One of the main advantages of having a family doctor is the ability to know your whole family, the health of each family member and how genetics plays a role in your family’s health. Family doctors can use this advantage to emphasize the importance of and practice preventative medicine.
