Women’s Gastroenterology
Health Services Specially Designed for Women
We are committed to providing women’s health care that is up to date, compassionate and patient friendly. Our providers provide guidance and care for female-specific health issues starting at puberty and continuing throughout life.
For Women
The gastrointestinal tract between men and women are overall very similar but there are some subtle differences. These differences can lead to unique symptoms and gastrointestinal (GI) disorders in women compared to men.
Celiac Disease Diagnosis and Management
Celiac disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate a protein called gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, barley, and possibly oats. Contact us to learn more about how we can help alleviate your symptoms.
Clinical Trials
Our ongoing clinical trials in gastroenterology focus on the treatment of reflux, liver disease, irritable bowel syndrome, gastrointestinal motility, inflammatory bowel disease and adverse side effects of anti-inflammatory medications.
Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy for detection of colon polyps and cancer has become standard for adults beginning at age 50 (African Americans starting at age 45). However, not all colonoscopic examinations are equivalent in their quality. There are several advantages in having your colonoscopy scheduled through Wake Gastroenterology.
Colorectal Cancer Screening
Colorectal cancer has become one of the worst killers in our country, largely because of our discomfort in dealing with it. Because there are rarely symptoms in the earliest, most treatable stages of this disease, it is especially important to be screened regularly for colorectal cancer.
Digestive Cancer Screening
Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers include a broad category of diseases affecting multiple organs. The goal of early diagnosis remains paramount for the effective management of these diseases.
Endoscopy
Endoscopy lets your doctor examine the lining of the upper part of your gastrointestinal tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (first portion of the small intestine).
Fecal Incontinence Management
More than 6.5 million Americans have fecal incontinence. It affects people of all ages–children as well as adults. Fecal incontinence is more common in women than in men and more common in older adults than in younger ones.
Gallbladder Stones and Dysfunction Management
Gallstones are more common among women, Native Americans, Mexican Americans, and people who are overweight. Gallstone attacks often occur after eating a meal.
Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) & Gastritis Management
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close properly and stomach contents leak back, or reflux, into the esophagus.
Hemorrhoid Nonsurgical Treatment and Management
Internal hemorrhoids are one of the most common causes of rectal complaints and bleeding in the country. We are currently using the OCRH O’Regan System for definitive treatment of internal hemorrhoids. This highly effective, minimally invasive procedure is performed in our offices in just a few minutes, and most patients return to work that same day.
Inflamatory Bowel Disease: Ulcerative Colitis & Chrohn's Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an umbrella term used to describe disorders that involve chronic inflammation of your digestive tract. See your doctor if you experience a persistent change in your bowel habits or if you have any of the signs and symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease.
Infusion Therapy
Wake Gastroenterology provides in-office infusion services for the treatment of anemia, osteoperosis and Crohn’s disease. We have nearly a decade of experience in the infusion of Remicade for patients with Crohn’s disease.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
One in five Americans has IBS, making it one of the most common disorders diagnosed by doctors. It occurs more often in women than in men, and it usually begins around age 20.
Management of Liver Disease
Our clinic is able to provide a seamless and thorough evaluation of liver disorders including in-house laboratory testing, on-site imaging (ultrasound, CT scan) and liver biopsy. Our gastroenterologist is trained in the evaluation and treatment of a myriad of liver diseases.
Pathology Services
The tissue specimens that are obtained during endoscopy are placed in small canisters containing formaldehyde solution for fixation and submitted to our in-office histopathology laboratory for further processing. All of our pathology slides are read by a group of local pathologists for interpretation. The report is then relayed to the gastroenterologist and the information is then shared with the patient and referring physician.
SmartPill Motility Study
The SmartPill Motility study is less invasive and more comfortable than many GI and radiological procedures to assess gastrointestinal motility. The procedure is performed in an office setting and requires a brief 20 minute visit.
Video Capsule Endoscopy
Capsule Endoscopy enables your doctor to examine the duodenum, jejunum, ileum of your small intestine. Your doctor will use a vitamin-pill sized video capsule as an endoscope, which has its own camera and light source. While the video capsule travels through your body, images are sent to a data recorder you will wear on a waist belt. Most patients consider the test comfortable.
