Prescription Refills: Best Practices

Here are a few helpful hints to assist you with getting your prescription refilled by the time you need it.

Prescription Refill Tips

  •  Please remember that it takes 3-4 business days to process a prescription request
  •  Always try to make the request when you have about a 10 day supply left to ensure that you do not run out.
  •  If you see that there are no more refills on the bottle, do not use that prescription number. When we send in a new prescription it will be assigned a new prescription number and it could be overlooked if the pharmacy is looking for the old prescription number.
  • Instead, visit us and make the request to WIMC through your patient portal.

Prescription Request Process

When you make the request and we complete it, you will receive a response stating that your prescription has been approved and sent to your pharmacy.  If your medication can not be sent electronically to the pharmacy, we will send a message to you letting you know that your script is ready for you to pick up from our office. You can also make the request through your pharmacy. Explain that you are out of refills and need a new prescription. The pharmacy will contact us for approval.

The last way to make a request is through the prescription secretary. She will get approval from your physician and send it to the pharmacy. Leaving multiple messages will only delay the request since the prescription secretary needs to listen to all messages. If you leave a message for your nurse for the request, she will forward it to the prescription secretary.

There are certain medications that may not be refilled because you need a follow up appointment or recent lab testing that could affect the dosage of your medicine. Below are a few examples.

  • Medications for A.D.D/A.D.H.D. require an initial follow up appointment after being on the medication for 30 days. If it is working for you, then your physician may require follow-up visits every 3 months. This also includes anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication.
  • Thyroid, Testosterone, Coumadin, B-12, Vitamin D3…etc are medications that are dependent upon your lab results.

Before you drive to your pharmacy, call them to verify if your prescription has been filled and is ready for pick up. Many pharmacies such as Harris Teeter, Walgreens and CVS can enroll you in a text alert. Please ask your pharmacy representative if they have notifications like this and how you can enroll.
