Farmer’s Market Challenge

Farmer’s Market Challenge!

Fresh produce can be expensive, but when it is in season in your area, it can be quite cost effective!  In July-August there is a particular item in season that is special to NC… the Sprite Melon!  To view what is in season, check the seasonal charts displayed here at: https://www.ncagr.gov/markets/availabilitychart.pdf

The natural sugar content of a Sprite Melon is 25 to 30 percent higher than other melons, making it extra sweet!1  The juicy, firm flesh of the sprite melon is like a mix of pear and honeydew.1

The Sprite Melon has brown markings – called “sugar cracks” – near the stem end. These stripes are a sign of optimal sweetness.1 Sprite Melons only have 110 calories per melon!1  In addition, one serving (half melon) provides 150% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C.1

The N.C. Specialty Crops Program at N.C. State University introduced the melon to farmers because it grows so well in the NC climate.1  The sprite melon is grown almost exclusively in North Carolina.1

A fun way to use this sweet melon is to peel and mash the melon, mix it together with some whipped topping such as Cool Whip, and freeze for a sweet treat!1,2  For more great recipe ideas for Sprite Melons, check out: https://lenoir.ces.ncsu.edu/2013/08/melons-melons/
